Registering a newborn in Turkey is carried out by the administrative authorities and it’s fairly easy.

In Turkey, births must be recorded to the Governorates’ Population and Civil Registry Departments “Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü”. This includes fatherless children.

The mother, father, or legal guardian of the kid must contact the authorities. In the absence of parents or legal guardians, the child’s grandmother, grandfather, adult siblings, or any other accompanying persons must notify the Population and Civil Registry Departments.

Turkish law requires that notification be filed to the Population and Civil Registry Departments within 30 days. If the notification is completed within 30 days, there is no fee.

Turkey has a requirement that births be registered in each governorate’s Provincial Directorate of Population and Civil Registry.

Step 1: Know the registration process

The first step is to become familiar with the notification obligations.

Each birth in Turkey must be registered in the Provincial Directorate of Population and Civil Registry, regardless of whether it was the parents’ or not. In the absence of parents, legal guardians, grandparents, adult siblings, or other persons accompanying the child, the birth may be recorded to the Population and Civil Registry Departments.

Step 2: Gather documents

Before making contact with the Population and Civil Registration Departments, please confirm You have the following documents:

  • Birth proof document (obtained from the hospital where the birth took place, whether it is a government or private hospital).
  • Translation of the parents’ passports, or residence permits, if any.
  • Translation of the marriage contract or family book in case the marriage was registered outside Turkey, or the Turkish family book if the marriage was registered inside Turkey.

Step 3: Going to Kaymakam and receiving a birth certificate

After submitting the above-mentioned documents, the district governor “Kaymakam” in the area of residence, where the newborn is registered at the Civil Status Department, and then the parents are given two certified documents on the birth certificate.

It is noteworthy that Turkish laws do not grant the newborn Turkish citizenship if the parents are foreigners, but if one of the parents holds Turkish citizenship, the newborn is given a Turkish identity card immediately after birth.

If both parents are foreigners, the baby does not get Turkish citizenship; nevertheless, if one parent is Turkish, the newborn is immediately given a Turkish citzenship.
